Evolutionary Tarot (or Tarot Evolutivo, as it’s commonly called) shifts the focus away from external circumstances and onto internal metamorphosis. It is tarot with an emphasis on your personal, spiritual, and emotional growth. Instead of predicting what might happen, Evolutionary Tarot uncovers deep truths about your inner world—helping you overcome unconscious blockages and create a more aligned, empowered future.
In this post, I’ll dive deep into what Evolutionary Tarot is, how it differs from traditional readings, and why it’s the perfect tool for your journey toward self-discovery and co-creation with the universe.
Transforming the Way We Read Cards
The concept of Evolutionary Tarot emerged in the late 20th century, particularly in South America and Spain. Inspired by Jungian psychology, spiritual coaching, and self-development, this approach moved away from fortune-telling and instead used the tarot as a powerful tool for self-awareness.
Unlike predictive tarot, which asks “What will happen to me in the future?”, Evolutionary Tarot asks:
Why do I keep experiencing the same patterns?
What conscious (or unconscious!) beliefs are shaping my life?
How can I actively change my future for the better?
This represents a fundamental shift in how tarot is used—from passive fate to conscious co-creation. Tarot Evolutivo is widely practiced in Argentina (where I live!), Chile, Spain, and Mexico — yet it remains largely unknown in English-speaking countries. Which is why I’m here to teach you what South Americans have been using for decades. :)

Evolutionary Tarot doesn’t ignore pain, fear, or self-doubt—it asks you to face your shadows, learn from them, and emerge stronger. There is wisdom in everything you experience — that’s the essence of alchemy.
Empowerment Through Insight – Instead of being a passive recipient of fate, Evolutionary Tarot encourages active participation in your destiny. Evolutionary tarot will provide you the map — but you have the power to choose your paths from there.
How an Evolutionary Tarot Reading Works
In an Evolutionary Tarot reading, the focus is on uncovering the “why” behind life’s challenges rather than foretelling a predetermined future. Even the smallest internal shift can change the course of your destiny.
While every reading is entirely unique, the fundamental structure remains the same:
Centering Yourself: This type of tarot is entirely centered on the person getting the reading. After all, it is your life, your growth, your challenges, and your choices that shape your internal and external world. Connecting with the power of that is key.
Setting the Intention: The session begins by clearly defining the area of life you’d like to explore—be it a recurring emotional pattern, a personal challenge, a relationship dynamic, or anything you’d like to understand with more clarity and intention.
Connecting with The Story: The cards will begin to reveal a story for you — illuminating themes and archetypes that need your attention. The tarot card reader will guide you along the story, connecting with their intuition as well as yours to reveal a complete picture of the situation at hand.
Developing the Map: Your path will be laid out with a series of tasks and choices — all guiding you towards your highest personal growth and healing. Think of this as a map to help guide you on your journey. Every persons map is completely unique to them and their circumstance.
Aligned Action: With the map in hand, you can now take inspired, empowered action towards your personal growth and healing. The power is completely in your hands.
How Do Oracle Cards Fit Within Evolutionary Tarot?
Excellent question — I personally enjoy using oracle cards as a supplement to evolutionary tarot card readings, though not everybody does. The reason I use them is because oracle decks get very specific to a theme or circumstance, and they will often trigger another avenue of insight and meditation.
For example, if the theme of a reading is around lack or not having enough, I will pull from a deck called Divine Abundance — because abundance takes multiple forms (peace, freedom, love, intuition) that we are never truly separate from.
If the theme of a reading is around love and difficulty finding it, I will pull from a series of love oracle decks that emphasize self-care, self-love, and love being the highest vibration of the universe.
If the theme of a reading is around healing the past, I will pull from a series of healing oracles that reframe the many ways healing can appear in our lives, and supplement with a deck of mantras and affirmations to build on the positive momentum.
The intention is to support the messages of the evolutionary tarot readings in very direct, solutions-oriented ways.
